07.14.08 | Save Money on Gas with Rewards Cards
Have you heard the fuel forecast? Experts are predicting gas prices will rise above $5 per gallon by fall. If
you’re like me and commute daily then you understand how the pain you feel at the pump is only going to increase and at the worst possible time for those going back to school. I started to think about this and wondered how students can counter this increase without somehow making more money.
I was reminded of this roommate I had after college named Jason. Jason was an accountant and I gave his quirky behavior around money and finance a mixed review. One of the things he always did was to pay for all his groceries, gas and other everyday expense with his credit card. He did it because it was easier to manage his money and he got some sort of rewards back.
Personally I thought that was a good idea in theory but that in reality using a credit card for regular expenses would make it harder to budget. For example it’s much easier to go over your grocery budget if you are using a credit card versus cash or a check. But then I thought about gas. Gas is different; you can only fill up your tank until it’s full so there’s no risk of overspending. A gas rewards credit card is actually a really good idea.
Gas rewards cards are just like regular credit cards except they pay you back a percentage of every dollar you spend at the pump. Typically they will give you 3% to 5% back as cash for every dollar spent which is the same thing as saving 12 to 20 cents per gallon. This can add up to $2 to $5 for each fill up. Multiply that by how many times you fill up each month and that’s the money you could be saving on fuel which you simply aren’t right now. You’re buying the gas anyway so if you can be responsible and save the cash you’d normally spend on gas this is an easy way to off set the increases.
The challenge for you is to be responsible and try to only use it for gas and pay it off each month. If you end up letting your balance carry over from month to month you’ll be paying them back the money they’re paying you to cover interest payments. That might be OK in a pinch but it’s not a good plan. So what credit cards offer student the best Gas Rewards Programs?

July 15th, 2008 | #
this may be the craziest thing i have ever done..but i dont want to graduate owing the national debt..
July 15th, 2008 | #
This is not a good idea for kids who have never had a credit card. They do not have the experience for using credit responsibly.
July 15th, 2008 | #
a possibility
July 15th, 2008 | #
I agree with this. Also its a good way to help build credit!
July 15th, 2008 | #
Sounds good! But with not only gas rising, the cost of food and everything else, it’s still going to be hard to budget. What is needed is a way to bring in extra income.
July 16th, 2008 | #
I agree that physical cash is easier to manage. some times with the cards you spend without really noting till you realise you are out.
July 16th, 2008 | #
I think a gas card is a great way to track my gas expenses and to save money! Great Idea!
July 16th, 2008 | #
Excellent idea, Try it out!
July 16th, 2008 | #
I like the cash back bonus program, but I feel that it is a marketing tool to earn interest on a delay payment option.
July 16th, 2008 | #
I think that this is a great idea, considering the fact that I fill up my tank at least once a week. You’ve just got to be careful with just using it for gas and not a shopping spree.
July 16th, 2008 | #
the best way to avoid the pump is to use the public transportation system!
July 16th, 2008 | #
This is a very interesting idea. I personally always carry cash, but everyone else nowadays does not…so it would be a very good thing to try. Thanks
July 16th, 2008 | #
sorry, not good idea
July 16th, 2008 | #
I don’t feel that it is wise to use a Credit Card to buy gas because that credit card has intrest on it and then you are paying that plus the intrest.
July 17th, 2008 | #
I think this a fabulous idea. I have actually done this in the past with regular credt cards, and if I satyed disciplined it works relatively well. It also sounds as though it will save a lot of money
July 17th, 2008 | #
look
July 17th, 2008 | #
Yeah, you know what? I think this whole gas price thing is good for America and bad for us. This is why!! We have the highest percent of people with heart, health, and body weight issues. People are finding themselves walking, riding thier bike and other ways of transportation other than sitting. Bad thing is, along with rising gas prices is food prices also and others. So yeah, this credit solution could work but what are we going to do about the rest of the rising prices??
July 17th, 2008 | #
I will apply for one of these at a later date-great idea !
July 17th, 2008 | #
Yeah maybe.. Sure LOL but gas is high already so IM DONE!!! LOL
July 17th, 2008 | #
Gas is already high so IM DONE!!! I’ll just do the best I can do..
July 17th, 2008 | #
I agree with the writer of this blog. It is dangerous to get a credit card if you can’t manage your money the right way.
July 17th, 2008 | #
Isn’t this crazy how we have gimmicks just to get people to save on gas what happened to gas being 99cents a gallon!
July 17th, 2008 | #
Good article
July 17th, 2008 | #
I think physical cash even with risk its presents is easier to manage
July 18th, 2008 | #
some student are returning student and do not have good credit
July 18th, 2008 | #
this article is interesting
July 18th, 2008 | #
thats great to get cash back on gas but isnt there some credit cards that give you a percent back on gas and groceries and stores like that?
July 18th, 2008 | #
I also use a credit card for buying gas, its simple, fast, and reliable. I guess it depends on the person because my brother is the complete opposite, he would ruin is credit.
July 18th, 2008 | #
Ifeel using a credit card with todays economy is setting yourself up for failure unless u r able to pay off monthley
July 18th, 2008 | #
It’s a good thought but i just dont know….
July 18th, 2008 | #
I think it to be a good idea as well but instead of a line of credit do the Green dot debit cards My mother got me
one when I first started College and it would send me text messages to let me know what was availabe on my card with you knowing what you have you would not spend it so quick.
July 18th, 2008 | #
interesting
July 18th, 2008 | #
good article
July 18th, 2008 | #
Awesome! I think I’ll try it when I get a car. I’ve never had a credit card before, but this is a good reason to apply for one.
July 19th, 2008 | #
the article was fantastic
July 19th, 2008 | #
This sounds great. I will definitely consider getting a credit card when I get a car and have to start paying for gas.
July 19th, 2008 | #
As a student i have had some trouble with credit cards its just way too easy to use them for other things besides gas.
July 19th, 2008 | #
A credit card does mean responsibility and you have to start being responsible sometime. To get a a rebate to help out in college sounds like a good deal to me. I will try it.
July 19th, 2008 | #
This may not be a good solution. Many already have enough credit card debt.
July 20th, 2008 | #
Dangerous, and what is the interest rate and billing cycle on these gas cards?
July 21st, 2008 | #
I think buying gas on a credit card and paying the card balance off each month is a good (and for me a proven) method of managing your gas expenses. But you have to pay it off every month or it’s not a good deal.
July 21st, 2008 | #
Owing anything on credit cards is not wise, especially while in school!
July 21st, 2008 | #
It is an okay idea if you can handle it but it’s too risky..I’d rather just manage my money than have to worry about a bill every month. In theory you are doing the same thing you would be doing if you just keep a savings account then the money would be there without worrying about owing anyone. (An okay idea but i would proceed with caution.)
July 21st, 2008 | #
Always (& I do mean ALWAYS) read the fine print and understand what you have to pay back not just what is borrowed.
July 21st, 2008 | #
I think it offers a great incentive!
July 21st, 2008 | #
i dont deal with credit cards their the reason im in debt now
July 22nd, 2008 | #
I believe that I’ll stick with saving my own money, or just banking it!!
July 22nd, 2008 | #
This is a really good idea if one is disciplined enough to pay the balance in full monthly.
July 22nd, 2008 | #
This is definatly a good possibility and way to save.
July 22nd, 2008 | #
This is really good way to learn how to manage monthly payments as well as build good credit.
July 23rd, 2008 | #
sounds good but i can not drive my first year at school, so unless i drive alot when i visit home it is not that good.
July 23rd, 2008 | #
I have been afraid of managing a credit card…but this makes sense. Especially if charging is confined to gas purchase.
July 23rd, 2008 | #
Interesting!!!
July 23rd, 2008 | #
For someone who commutes on a daily basis, I think this would be an excellent idea. Once gas prices reach an all-time high, I believe people will begin having a different point of view and become more open to the idea. There is much risk involved; however, be responsible and don’t let it get out of hand. Budget the money ahead of time and put it off to the side.
July 24th, 2008 | #
amazing.
July 24th, 2008 | #
Anybody know Dave Ramsey? He would go balistic with this one. it is never good to charge - only in the banks favor not ours!
July 24th, 2008 | #
save and pay with cash
July 24th, 2008 | #
Sounds good on paper, but considering the debt this country is presently in I think it could actually create more of a problem.
July 24th, 2008 | #
this is a great idea
July 24th, 2008 | #
Sounds all well and good but everyone does not have credit thhat is god enough for this option
July 24th, 2008 | #
I rather not used a credit card because research say that they will take more off your credit card than from you paying at the pump. Yes, gas is expensive but it is all good!
July 24th, 2008 | #
If you pay your bill every month, just as you’d pay for gas with cash every month it doesn’t cost anything to have a gas card and you get cash back. What research does show is that many people are not disciplined with credit cards in general, but many are.
July 24th, 2008 | #
I personally ALWAYS buy gas and groceries with my American Express. I pay it off each month and never pay interest. I also get lots and lots of rewards points which I use to redeem for fun things like golf clubs, iPods, cameras, etc.
July 24th, 2008 | #
I have looked into a gas credit card, and after seeing this article, it has showed me how it will really pay off in the end. I will keep this in mind.
July 24th, 2008 | #
Don’t buy it, if you can’t pay for it
July 24th, 2008 | #
pay with cash and coserve
July 24th, 2008 | #
sounds ok but it can be hard to pay it all off at the end of the month. I get rewards by using a debit card which is easier for me to use than worrying about a credit card.
July 24th, 2008 | #
I already do that and it works!
July 25th, 2008 | #
i think it is best to save your money and pay with cash.
July 25th, 2008 | #
It’s easy to pay off your balance each month if you only use it for gas. Builds credit and teaches responsibility.
July 25th, 2008 | #
Good idea and I used to do that until I ran into financial problems and started using the card for everything. Now I have to pay back on a payment plan because I am not able to pay the entire amount off each month. This works if you have the money to pay it off each month.
July 25th, 2008 | #
This is a horrible idea. This is direct marketing from credit card companies who often offer cards to students who have no job and no way of paying them back. I guarantee the money you “save” from the card incentives is not near what you’ll be paying in interest monthly plus yearly fees. If you don’t believe me, do the math. Save your money. The credit card companies won’t care if your car breaks down or if you loose your job. they want their money because they are a business. They’ll hike that fee up to 48% when you miss payments, because they can. Check the back of your credit card statements or ask other people. The best way to achieve good credit is through prompt payment of utility and medical bills. We’re in college be weird be different pay for everything in cash. Long Live Dave Ramsey !!!!
July 25th, 2008 | #
Valerie, there are a number of inaccuracies in your post however the primary point you missed is that that if you pay your bill every month with the cash you’d have spent on gas you don’t pay interest and the credit card companies don’t make money on you. Therefore this concept would save you money especially since the cards I pointed out have no yearly fees. I never said its for everybody I just try to give people ideas with these blogs and educate them.
Responsible credit management however is something students need to learn and also they should start building credit. Unfortunately medical bills and utility bills do not report into credit reporting agencies unless you are late paying them. Thus they do not help build credit except that they refrain from harming it if you pay them.
When you take out a loan, get a credit card or engage in a similar financial agreement with a bank, those go on your credit report and thus your good and bad financial behavior is recorded. Yes you could pay everything in cash but will you be buying your $300,000 house and your $30,000 car in cash? Most people won’t so for them building good credit is actually important.
July 25th, 2008 | #
I believe that it is always better to pay with cash
July 26th, 2008 | #
I don’t use credit cards. I don’t like giving other people my money.
July 26th, 2008 | #
I think thats ok but alot of people lately becausand intereste of the economy cant really pay of credit card debt
July 26th, 2008 | #
Thanks for the suggestions!
July 26th, 2008 | #
i think this is a good idea if you have the money to pay back the card, just a way to get a reward for something you constantly have to have.
July 26th, 2008 | #
I think if you dont have a credit card and to establish credit it a great idea, if you make payments on time and actually pay it off.
July 27th, 2008 | #
My parents already have one and it really is great. Like all the other credit cards just be sure to make your payment on time. But if you don’t, at least the cashback bonus makes you feel a little better about the finance charges.
July 27th, 2008 | #
Might check it out.
July 27th, 2008 | #
I don’t think a credit card would solve gas problems, credit cards have interest rates and that would mean all the money you think your saving, your really just losing and more. Even though you get cash back the interest rate makes the price of whatever you bought higher because your paying back interest plus whatever you bought. The credit card company has to make money too. I think the only thing you can do about gas is find alternate fuel sources or use better fuel milage cars.In the end it doesn’t matter though,if you believe in Jesus Christ and follow in his ways then you’ll be happier in your life and you shouldn’t worry about gas.
July 27th, 2008 | #
I didn’t know about that before. Bright!
July 27th, 2008 | #
considering the fact that I fill up my tank at least once a month and i am unemmployed I think that this is a great and I’ll take this information through great consideration.
July 27th, 2008 | #
Lets solve our gas problems by simply not using it. I ride a bicycle, no gas and protects the planet. Those silly cars
July 28th, 2008 | #
Credit Cards are never a good idea. if you spend a thousand dollard on a credit card it can take 50 months to pay it off
July 28th, 2008 | #
I Think this a good ideal for some of us who have credit cards but there are some of us who have never had a credit card before.
July 28th, 2008 | #
ppl need to build credit so i guess i might as well use it for something i use on a regular basis and build credit faster
July 28th, 2008 | #
I think this would be a good idea
July 29th, 2008 | #
Sounds good in theory, but how will it be in practice?
July 29th, 2008 | #
COULD BE A GREAT IDEA IF YOU ARE DISCIPLINED ENOUGH.
July 30th, 2008 | #
My dad made me do the whole gas card thing, and it works wonders
July 30th, 2008 | #
I agree with Jenny… in practice it would be much harder to do
July 30th, 2008 | #
I think it’s a good idea for only those that truly understand credit.
July 30th, 2008 | #
its a good idea, only can spend for gas though, i dont know if kids could handle that
July 30th, 2008 | #
I was always taught to only use credit cards for emergency use. I still think its a good idea. Paying for everything with a credit card can lead to problems when you really need it. On the other hand, they are very helpful and quick when you do need to use them.
July 30th, 2008 | #
I completely agree with this, I always use cash for gas. In general I hate using my card! It really is so much harder to keep track of how much your spending when all you see is the little plastic thing in your hand. At least with cash, you see less of it, and visually your poverty begins to register.
July 30th, 2008 | #
This was very interesting.
July 31st, 2008 | #
This was very interesting. It will make me take a second look at credit cards.
July 31st, 2008 | #
Im not the very best with credit cars, for the main reason that i do not own one. I have seen too many ppl fall deep into debt due to over use of the plastic money. The idea is well thought out but i think i will just use money that i have worked hard and earned, its easier to track.
July 31st, 2008 | #
To do something like this would take a lot of discipline. A good idea for someone who knows how to follow it like a plan and not just a past time type thing to do.
July 31st, 2008 | #
good idea must be ready to handle
July 31st, 2008 | #
Building credit is one thing, but not paying your bills will really hurt, especially if you don’t have a steady income. Just be careful
July 31st, 2008 | #
i did not know that before
July 31st, 2008 | #
Credit Cards can get you in too much trouble!!!!!!!!!!!!!
July 31st, 2008 | #
Good idea, but I don’t want a second credit card.
July 31st, 2008 | #
Great, I’ll try it
July 31st, 2008 | #
That is so true!! I never thought of it like that!
July 31st, 2008 | #
Never knew about these great options before.
July 31st, 2008 | #
It so true that when people are getting the credit cards to pay for gas it will save money, but they need to keep track of the amount spent and if its worth paying for by credit cards in the long run.
August 1st, 2008 | #
I didn’t knowthis. It was very helpful.
August 1st, 2008 | #
That was very interesting to read.
August 1st, 2008 | #
Wow, very interesting. I always like to use a credit card because I like the tank to be all the way full but with cash I have to guess. i didnt know there existed cards for gas that rewarded you.
August 1st, 2008 | #
I think it’s a good idea. I use my card for gas only, once a week. I’m SO changing to one that gives me money back.
August 2nd, 2008 | #
I like the credit card, am able to get something in return
August 3rd, 2008 | #
It’s a little too complicated for first-time users of credit cards. You really have to be responsible and pay back money owed and with credit cards there’s always some hidden thing, you don’t know about. Bringing in a little more income would be the best way to go in actually saving money. Drive only to school and work. If ur friends wanna hangout use public transportation, grab a bus card for weekends only fri., sat., and sun.
August 4th, 2008 | #
iNTERESTING… STILL NOT OPENING A SECONG CC
August 4th, 2008 | #
No need for another credit card..
August 4th, 2008 | #
Something to think about. Right now my mom pays for my gas… so I’ll have to see when that stops happening!
August 5th, 2008 | #
not a good idea and the interest rate is too high
August 5th, 2008 | #
yea gas is prolly what most of my money goes to…. and when it comes to credit cards…i think i will stay far away from them
August 5th, 2008 | #
very interesting
August 6th, 2008 | #
I rather go with public transportation.
August 6th, 2008 | #
Gas is way too much money nowadays, but htere isn’t much we can do because if you are in the middle of suburbia or a rural area way from trains or buses, you have to drive.
August 6th, 2008 | #
May be a good idea but it’s risky for first time card holders….
August 6th, 2008 | #
With the way gas prices are now a day along with the economy most students have to work as well as go to school. I think this is a reason online classes and schools are becoming more popular. Regardless ifyou have a credit card with gas prices or not you still have to pay it back along with the interst! So gas will be even more once you think about it, you have the interest rate then possibily a late payment if you run into a bind!
August 6th, 2008 | #
I thought it might be cheaper to commute. But if prices keep going up not sure I made the right decision.
August 6th, 2008 | #
it is ridiculous how high the gas prices are
August 6th, 2008 | #
i dont think it is fair for college student who has to drive to school. we should have a discount
August 6th, 2008 | #
I never really did like all those rewards cards. They always seemed like a scam to me. I’m not sure if they’re doing it anywhere else, but where I live, it’s cheaper to pay cash for your gas then it is with credit. Some gas stations where I live, give you a ‘cash price’ and a ‘credit price’ and the credit price is always higher than the cash price. I remember hearing on the news that gas station owners were doing this to discourage people from using their cards at the pump because the gas station owenrs were having to pay more for allowing customers to use their cards or something. I’m not exactly sure on the details, though. I also don’t like the idea that the gas pumps make a hold of aorund $75 to your credit card or check card. I would rather pay cash for as much items I could so that way I knew what I could and couldn’t get. But if you’re the type of person to actually log your expenses, then maybe a gas rewards card could be helpful.
August 7th, 2008 | #
Some people dont make good money and are in the process of building credit. SO its hard for those people to spend money on gas along with food to survive!!
August 7th, 2008 | #
Gas rewards are much needed in this day and age
August 7th, 2008 | #
I think this is a good idea but may be hard for some people to budget.
August 7th, 2008 | #
I agee with te rewards system whole-heartedly! However, I personally, am scared to death of credit cards; with the many credit fraud possibilities and how easy it is to lose credit, etc. Look in your community!
The local school in my community has a fundraiser program for their athletes. The sell discount cards called Ram Cards. On these cards are several businesses who hav agreed to giv a certain % of things such as meals school supplies etc. The local gas stations hav agree to giv 3-5cents off for every gallon of gas u buy dependin on which business u go to.
This system works very well for me. I hope it helps you.
August 7th, 2008 | #
i really happy i dont have a car because i would be broke all they time, but i do think it is a good opportunity for those who get gas everyday to get a reward when useing their card.
August 7th, 2008 | #
awesome
August 7th, 2008 | #
The more I read about credit cards, I just want to pay cash for everything if I can.
August 7th, 2008 | #
cool
August 7th, 2008 | #
Receiving reward points for every dollar spent is a good idea for people who spend a lot on gas every year.
August 7th, 2008 | #
good article
August 7th, 2008 | #
I dont think that using a credit card to pay for gas will be good for most college students I think that its a bad idea beacuse some people will take advantage of it and use it the wrong way
August 8th, 2008 | #
Good ideas, these might be useful
August 8th, 2008 | #
good ideas, these could be helpful
August 8th, 2008 | #
Credit cards can be a good idea, but a person must have self control. I use my American Express card when I pump gas because I get 3% cash back for purchasing gas at Costco gasoline stations. It my not sound like a lot but at the end of the year, boy those it add up.
August 8th, 2008 | #
I feel the gas prices is bad. i drive far to school, this is not good for me or others.
August 8th, 2008 | #
advices are always considered. as gas prices go hihger everyday we shoul think about massive comute. examples like friends in thesame neighborhood should dirve to school in one car and eqaully share the cost of keeping the car running.
August 9th, 2008 | #
yes citi credit cards are the best
August 9th, 2008 | #
Not sure its a good idea, unless you have great self control and only use it and pay for it when it comes.
August 10th, 2008 | #
word
August 10th, 2008 | #
I am always scared of those credit cards that offer the reward points. In my opinion if the card is good enough it wouldnt have to give out freebies to attract people. And gas prices are too high! Florida is paying more than the rest of the country!! Also, they got the prices so high that when they lower it ten cents we feel relief and we are happy but in reality it is still very high considering the gas prices a year back.
August 11th, 2008 | #
I don’t think this is a very good idea.
August 11th, 2008 | #
I agree with Patricia, I don’t think this is a very good idea!
August 11th, 2008 | #
charging gas costs more money so what you get back is the extra you pay. not worth it
August 11th, 2008 | #
great Article
August 12th, 2008 | #
people are starting to complain now that rising gas prices are affecting their way of life but they do not stop to consider why the prices are rising. The average number of cars for each household has risen from 0-1 to 3-4 depending on the number of people living in the household. Also there are more SUVs and minivans on the road then anything else. If people need to find the urge to complain about the rising gas prices they should realize that they are the ones causing the problem in the first place.

Face facts that year-to-year going forward gas is NOT going to get any cheaper. Many of the largest oil fields online now in the Middle East will be dry in the next 20 years.
If you read more of the posts here you will see a consistent message, be responsible and build good credit. Doing so at a young age will be beneficial to you when get out of school. Screw up and it will haunt you for a long time to come.

I think that could be helpful for some students but not be helpful for other students

Ya sure sounds great…whatever.

i knew pretty much everything before reading this but i think that it is a good idea to use credit just for gass. ONLY if you no you have that money when you charge it. By doing that you can get good credit because we all know this world is all about who has better credit.

its good to have credit, but only use your card if you know you can pay it back. Other wise you messing your whole life up.

It would be very helpful to students if they understand that paying off the bill in full when you receive the bill will save you money. However, allowing the bill to earn interest will not help you save.

this was very helpful information. I am now condsidering trying this.

I think that a gas card could be helpful. But it can also get you into trouble if you do not have the funds to pay it off every month. With gas prices going up I can see more and more people getting gas cards.,

Good idea, sounds like it could help people out but they have to be very good with credit.

This is a great and smart way to build credit.
August 14th, 2008 | #
This is a good idea, but I am very bad with credit, just like a lot of people.
August 14th, 2008 | #
It a good idea as long as you make the payment.

Okay, this is certainly not a real advice article or it would have warned against credit cards with extremely high interest rates. The links for credit cards here don’t even DISCLOSE the interest rate and I would be willing to bet it is over 20% and will come in the mail when the credit card is sent in extrenly small print hidden in the middle of a LONG legalease document. BE CAREFUL HERE!

It isn’t an advice column. Its a blog about ways to manage finances while in college that you may not have thought of.
If you read the article I explain that you should pay the bill each month which means the interest rate doesn’t matter - you don’t pay interest if you pay your total bill each month. Because you get the 5% cash back anyway, if you pay the bill monthly you make money. If you can’t do that this doesn’t work for you.
That being said, we wouldn’t recommend any cards with APRs over 20%, in fact we’ve never seen one with that as a basic rate. If you ever get an offer for a card with that APR its because your credit is terrible and you’d have received a better rate if your credit was better. By the way, paying a card off each month like we recommend is a fantastic way to build up good credit.
The cards we mention are between 12.99% and 16.99%. You can read the reviews here: http://www.studentplatinum.com/gas-credit-cards/
Just click on the card names.

Thank God I can bike to school. But the cash back program is a great way to get something back for paying 70 bucks or more per tank.

This is a great article. It makes sense, but in the long run, I still don’t think credit cards are too smart. But i haven’t reached 18 yet, and don’t quite understand the whole thing on credit cards, because I don’t have one. I probably won’t get one any time soon.

This is a great idea for those that have a steady income and always keep a rough idea on how much gas they will require each month. The key is to leave a little extra funds so that you don’t go over your limit each month.

I SURE LIKE THIS IDEA, ESPECIALLY FOR GAS PRICES, I HAVE TO DRIVE 120 MILES 2X A WEEK, AND MONEY IS SO TIGHT. AUGUST 19, 2009
