11.03.08 | Take the $500 Savings Challenge
Challenge yourself to save $500, you could win $500!
Saving money is hard; we are all much better spenders than savers but saving money is really important. Not only does it give you a safety net but but many students don’t realize that banks pay you for having money in a savings account. Yup, they pay you interest on your money every month. Why you may ask? Because they are borrowing that money from you to use for making loans like student loans to other people. The interest people pay back to banks on loans in part goes towards paying interest to you on your savings account. You can take your money out at any time and the US Government guarantees that up to $250,000.
Sounds awesome huh? That’s why we’ve put together this challenge to help encourage you to start saving. We are asking that you open a free ING Direct Savings account. Its free, flexible and has high interest rates to grow your savings its great for students.
How to Enter:

What Can I Win?
On December 31st we’ll randomly select two people who entered the challenge to award $500 deposits each. You must open an ING Direct Savings Account to win. Tricking us will result in bad karma plus we will only deposit the money into an ING account. ING gives students great tools to help grow their savings.
Who Can Enter?
Anybody can enter! All you have to do is open a new ING Direct Savings Account.
Top 4 Excuses for Not Taking the Challenge:
1. I don’t feel comfortable giving out my personal information online.
2. I don’t know who ING Direct is.
4. I already have a savings account.
Who is ING Direct and Can I Trust Them?
ING DIRECT, headquartered in Wilmington, Delaware exists to help you Save Your Money. I personally have an account with them I opened for this challenge and I use it! ING does business online, over the phone and by mail. Read more about ING here.

I entered this challange because I have return to college as a 42 year old grandmother and have recently found myself being placed on disability. I thought no I will not go out like this. I want to still use my mind regardless of the fact my physical condition has deemed me unable to work.I have exhausted my savings while being on disability and want to trying and become financially stable again.

I opened an ING account last Spring to test this out before offering it to members. I didn’t start saving in it until August but its working out very well. Here’s the thing, I have a regular savings account and its just too easy to slide money out of it into my checking account. By having the separate ING account its easier to keep it out of mind. I can always transfer it back though if I needed to. Plus, the higher interest rate on my savings is cool.

I did it! I had to give my checking account number so they could verify I’m a real person and also test the link but it was all secure and stuff. I know all about ING anyway, my brother uses them and has been trying to get me to open an account for years. The $500 give-away was the push I needed.

I’ll give it a try. I’m not sure how much I can save with the holidays approaching but at least I have the chance to win $500 and that will help!

November 16th, 2008 | #
I just opened and ING savings account, and I am so excited. This will help me save better and not touch my savings because i wont really notice it. Starting at $5 a week will be good till I can do more. A $500 bonus would be nice too! I’m trying to get to the point where I have at least 3 - 6 months worth of savings. Times are getting hard these days, and jobs don’t seem to be garaunteed anymore. Good luck to everyone!!!
November 17th, 2008 | #
Christa you got the idea!
With $5 a week you won’t get there overnight but tomorrow you will be closer than you were yesterday right?
Plus when your balance starts to get up there the interest payments the bank makes on your balance will really accelerate your savings!
November 17th, 2008 | #
Makes it so easy! Love it!
November 18th, 2008 | #

Sudan,
ING happens to be one of the safest banking systems in the WORLD with 0.085 ‘incidents’ per billion dollars in deposits. So many other major banks had such an alarmingly higher amount of theft, including Bank of America, with 17.65 incidents per billion dollars deposited.
In reality, the rewards of being on the Internet and doing commerce way outweigh the risks. And besides, they’re FDIC backed, like any bank. You’re insured.

I took up the challenge because in these tough times we all need a safety net of funds that we can rely on should we ever fall short. I hope everyone who opened the accounts puts it to good use and i pray for each and everyone. Good luck!!!

Hi, It’s me again. I’ve been doing great at my savings program. Even with Christmas and children and my first grandchild to shop for I have managed to commit to having money withdrawn from my checking auotmatically every month. I finished the semester back, by the way, with 3 A’s and a B. Not bad for an older woman huh? LOL. Hope you all are doing good with your savings and all did well this semester.
