Can you think of any ways to trim expenses and save a little bit as well? I mean selling stuff and collecting bottles is technically "work" rather than saving. Since you are putting the money into a savings account it works for the challenge but the lesson we are trying to teach is how to force yourself to be more frugal and make hard choices about the money you spend.

Being frugal and managing expenses is a lesson you will take with you. Later in life just making more money is not always going to be an option if you find yourself in a financial bind. Saving is a lesson you will use your whole life whereas collecting cans is one hopefully you will not.

I bet people who collect discarded cans and bottles for a living were not good savers!
